I have always enjoyed going to the movies. In my twenties, my friends and I would get in a car, drive to the theater, and cruise around looking for something to watch.
When you’re in a car, you rely on the movie posters and the number of pretty girls in line to tell you how good or bad the movie would be. That was when I was introduced to Drew Struzan's artwork. He is one of the best, in my opinion, movie poster artists who have put pencil to paper.
Fast-forward to 2013. I was looking at Drew’s website, ogling his many posters and other paintings, when there was an advertisement for a video of Drew painting a poster for Hell Boy. It was supposed to show his methods and give step-by-step instructions. Well, I pulled out my card and ordered it. I waited with anticipation for the CD to come. When it came, it didn’t disappoint.
Now, Mr. Struzan creates his pieces using very thin paint sprayed through an airbrush, then uses colored pencils to add details. So, I thought I could do the same with oil paints. The Horseman is my first attempt to create a painting influenced by Drew Struzan.
