This piece was commissioned by an old family friend, and once again, it took me two attempts to get this drawing right. Now, given how long I have been drawing, you’d think I could just get the piece done the first time. Alas, this is not the way life works my friends.

The problem I had with this piece was the reference image I was using kept reminding me of Michelangelo’s La Pieta.  The La Pieta is one of my favorite sculptures by the master, and the pose of the mother and child were quite similar.

When I started the second image, I turned the piece upside down and drew over half of it this way. Once I was well started, I rotated the piece right side up and finished it.  

Sometimes you have to start over.  Sometimes, you have to start over upside down.
