Impala

Impala

I am pleased with the way this piece turned out. You could call it mixed media as it has ink, colored pencil, white charcoal, and a white pen.

A trip to South Luangwa National Park in Zambia inspired this drawing. As we drove through the park, this little critter popped its head up just in time for this shot. Sure, I took others, but this one was the one I wanted.

Now, I had the image I wanted to draw and the tools at hand. Now, I just needed to do it.  So, I sat at the dining room table and went to work.  After some doodling, revisions, and finally, some more revisions, I was ready to break out my pens.  I have been drawing more and more lately with pens, and there is a good reason for this.   I’m away from home and can’t access all the fabulous stuff I have in my studio. On this topic, I had no spray fixative.  If I did, I might do more graphite drawings, but I don’t want to come home with a collection of smeared pencil drawings.

Fortunately, colored pencils don’t smear like graphite, and I used them to augment the color of this piece.
