Passage of Time

Passage of Time

I know I have talked about my Port-O-Studio quite a bit, but here’s another story about creating art without a formal studio. This one begins with a college graduation.

Like most large graduations, seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Since the ceremony took place in San Diego, we left early and had plenty of downtime. Cue the Port-O-Studio theme music.

At first, I didn't intend to turn this sketch into a watercolor painting. I let the piece guide me and let it develop organically. As a left-handed artist, I started with the right-side cliffs so my hand wouldn’t smear the graphite. It evolved into a drawing that seemed to call out for ink. Fortunately, I finished inking the piece before the graduation started.

After all the pomp and circumstance, we headed to a park for a celebratory picnic lunch. With time on my hands and the piece calling to me, I opened my watercolors and moved some paint around, and this is the result.
